What is it? Vitamin D3 also known as Colecalciferol is an essential vitamin for creating healthy bones and teeth. Our skin produces vitamin D when it is exposed to sunlight. It absorbs calcium and phosphorus and uses them in helping to create healthy bones and teeth. A lack of vitamin D in children can lead to a condition called rickets – this leads to legs becoming an improper shape. In adults a lack of Vitamin D can lead to bone pain known as osteomalacia.
Vitamin D can also be found in a small number foods in our diet. These include:
- oily fish – such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel
- red meat
- liver
- egg yolks
- fortified foods – such as some fat spreads and breakfast cereals
Dosage: Adults & Children aged 12 years and over: Take One Tablet Daily for the treatment & prevention of Vitamin D deficiency
Pregnancy and breast-feeding : If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. If you require extra vitamin D do not take it without medical supervision because too much vitamin D may harm your baby.
What are the side effects of taking excessive vitamin D?
Taking excessive amounts of vitamin D supplements over a long period of time can lead to a build up of calcium in the body (hypercalcaemia), which can actually damage the bones and cause kidney and heart problems.
